Back in the Game

Oh boy! I’m becoming responsible again. (Did anyone else’s mom used to tell them, “You’re responsible for your own experience”? No? Just me? Cool. Well, that’s what came to mind.)

Saturday entailed the last hoorah of nutritional irresponsibility as I enjoyed our company Christmas party without abandon (free drinks, buffet, the works). Tons of fun. I actually didn’t overindulge TOO badly – but didn’t hesitate to enjoy the macaroni and cheese and cupcakes. The end.

Hello, handsome.

Sunday

The Paleo right of passage: spending the day cooking for the week. I used to do this back in the good old days by bagging fruit and veggies and easy snacks so I could grab and go, since I’m always ON the go. But meals are a bit of a bigger booger (did I really just say that?). Here’s a sampling of what I cooked up:

  • Caramelized Brussel Sprouts (first Brussel sprouts experience! Not horrible. They kind of taste like mini cauliflowers? I can dig ’em. So can you. PLUS, they’re on sale.)
  • Roasted Cauliflower with Red Chili Cilantro Lime – cauliflower’s one of the baddest veggies in the books, man. Love this stuff. I’ve made cauliflower poppers before by chopping up some cauli (is it cool if I call it cauli?), tossing it in a big ole bowl with olive oil, salt, pepper, chipotle red chili powder, garlic and onion salt. It’s like a healthy person’s popcorn – you can go through a whole bowl real fast. This version had a nice zesty flavor to it and made the whole house smell delightful (all few hundred square feet of it).
  • Banana pancrepes – my take on the 2-ingredient mix I saw on Pinterest (thanks, Blogilates!). So easy for a lazy bones girl like myself. I literally mash up a banana (even when I buy them green, they ripen so fast! Perfect use for the pseudo-gross ones you don’t know what else to do with and feel guilty about throwing away), then use a fork to mix it two eggs, add a dash of cinnamon, and pour it into a heated pan with a spoonful of coconut oil. I mean… whoa.
Here's the mash-up!

Here’s the mash-up!

Not quite pancake, not quite crepe. Hence, the pancrepe.

Oh, and this happened, too. Bacon makes the world go round... in moderation.

  • Cappuccino Smoothie – total game changer, yo! I’m a smoothie fiend. They’re so easy and when you pump them full of good stuff like greens or whatever, they’re packed full of good old fashion nutrients, and they’re cheaper than Jamba Juice :). At first the idea of adding blueberries seemed really weird to me, but I didn’t even taste them, and the total combination was a perfect natural sweetener (I didn’t use the Stevia it calls for) that gave me a nice boost before and after my morning work out (more about that later).
  • Weight Loss Smoothie” – here again, another smoothie. Just can’t get enough. They never get old because there’s so many different combinations you can try! This one intrigued me with the chia seeds, and I just so happened to have some leftover from someone who brought them over (random). Not bad. Used a frozen fruit combo of pineapple, mango, strawberries and added a banana to balance out the citrus zing. Huzzah!
  • Kitchen sink chili — made this one up as we went along to try and wear out old ingredients. Threw all this in the crockpot. It was delightful. Made for a great post work out meal tonight after CrossFit.

1 lb. ground turkey

1 lb. ground pork

4 hatch green chilis

2 bell peppers (red and green)

1/2 white onion

4 garlic cloves

1 can organic diced tomatoes

3 chopped Roma tomatoes

Gobs of chili powder and assorted spices

Workouts

Other than that, I maintained the workout commitments for today that I posted about last time. Went to 24 Hour Fitness this morning and made it through the workout I put together, then begrudgingly crawled back to CrossFit tonight and was so glad I did. Such good people, such good motivators, always a good workout. We did a 10 minute AMRAP  of 8 air squats, 6 sit ups, 4 push ups and 20m shuttle runs. I made 6 and was just fine with it!

Good start to a good week. Gotta keep killin it! Here’s the fitspiration that’ kept me going today. Hope it encourages you, too!

Chocolate in the City

No lie, right this second I’m watching re-runs of Sex and the City (glamorous Friday night, I know). It’s the episode where Miranda gives up sex and chocolate becomes her substitute. She picks up a chocolate eclair in secret each night on her way home and it becomes her companion, comfort, dare I say… ecstasy?

“I feel that you need to know your good friend, Miranda Hobbs, has just taken a piece of cake out of the garbage and eaten it. You’ll probably need this information when you check me into the Betty Crocker clinic.”

Two things:

  1. The more I watch Sex and the City, the more I come to the forlorn conclusion that I AM Miranda Hobbs. But more importantly,
  2. Hello McFly! Chocolate = companion, comfort, ecstasy! Or really, food in general = all those things. Oy.

“Comforts” of the day: Starbucks (Friday morning tradition. I consider it my reward for making it through another week. In perfect honesty, though, it’s a big cheat, so… I’m going to need to discontinue that tradition or at least make it a healthier alternative when I order) and Chipotle (with chips and guac – eek!).

These are my last few cheats before jumping back on the Paleo bandwagon on Monday. I don’t trust myself so much to the point where I have to do a week’s worth of meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking on Sundays and also map out my entire work out schedule to hold myself accountable. I sent it to a few girlfriends to hold me accountable and see how many of them I can get to go with me or text me to make sure I’m actually up and running.

So, in the spirit of transparency, here’s next week’s plan! You can follow me on FourSquare and see where I’m working on, when and what I’m doing. Maybe I can help inspire you and you can help make me get my sorry butt into the gym when I say I’ll be there :).

“Candy is nature’s way of making up for Mondays.” – Rebecca Gober

(I’m not TOTALLY off my rocker… I know it’s Thursday.)

So let’s talk about how there is candy E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E this time of year. I mean, I know people always talk about how hard the holidays are on a diet because there’s so much good food at holiday parties and family dinners and blah blah blah. It’s all true.

But brah, candy is everywhere I turn my head at my office. Anyone else in the corporate world feeling my pain? Managers buy breakfasts for you (aka. donuts). Admins have giant baskets of the good stuff at their desks (I’m talking Reese’s, Sour Punch and Rolos, oh my!). Co-workers hand out sweet treats as little pick-me-ups. Teammates host bake-offs and demand you participate (proof below).

Can I get an AMEN?!

TXU Energy Cupcake Wars sampler. I thought I’d be a good little girl and bring Whole Foods gluten free Boston Cream Pie cupcakes (far left). I’m not gonna lie to you… they were pretty terrible. Few things will top the bliss of the homemade bacon chocolate cupcakes Marcel brought (right).

Having such peppy, holiday-happy people around me all the time wanting to spread good chocolate-covered cheer makes resisting awfully challenging. My brain hurts just thinking about how many times I have to say no to people – and myself! – every day.

Every week I feel a little bit like this.

Even when I find healthy alternatives I like, I tend to overeat them. Take guacamole for instance. I. Love. Me. Some guac. And I’m from Texas, so I know good guac. And I happen to now live with a husband who has perfected my recipe (how dare he) into the most stupendous batch of heart-healthy unsaturated fats known to man. And I may or may not request a batch every week. So instead of eating it in moderation, I pull a stunt like clearing out a whole mixing bowl in the span of two nights (evidence below).

I wouldn’t lead you astray. This actually IS the world’s greatest bowl of guacamole. And it’s all in my belly.

What are some tricks or tactics you use to resist? We all know carrots don’t taste nearly as good as candy corn, so c’mon people. Give me what you got!

Wednesday List Day

A few things:

1. CrossFit: My CrossFit Tiger’s Den coach totally called me out about not being at CrossFit this week. He’s straight up shaming me into working out again. Sometimes a little harassment goes a long way.

2. Food: My guilty go-to pleasure is the Santa Barbara salad at Baker Bros. restaurant. It’s half a mile from my office so I tend to run out and grab it to go sometimes. And by sometimes I mean maybe fairly frequently. And by maybe fairly frequently I mean at least once or twice a week. Oops. It’s just so stinking delicious, I can’t help myself. All things considered, I think it’s a pretty health-ish option and the best Paleo cheat ever. (Unfamiliar with the Paleo diet? Click on that link and get acquainted. It’s pretty great, albeit fairly difficult to sustain if you’re half the food-lover I am.

Behold: Baker Bros. Deli’s Santa Barbara Salad. The best salad you will ever eat. I mean… I’m just sayin’.

Baker Bros. hooks me up with a little extra dressing. And by a little extra dressing, I mean three extra ounces. (Don’t worry, I don’t always consume all of them.) #sorryimnotsorry #condimentsforlife

3. Idiosyncracies: You’ll learn very quickly that I like lists. Get used to it.

4. Accountability: Per the Chad’s post about sharing my meals for accountability, I’ve fulfilled my duty in my #2. Sharing every meal’s gonna be a little much, so I’ll link you to the greatest fitness and nutrition app ever: MyFitnessPal. Seriously – find me. I’ll encourage you, you encourage me.

5. Blogs: I follow a lot of blogs – albeit erratically – and want to promote as many as possible that promote healthy habits, honest living and just enjoyable reads. I came across this blog by Kelli called “Fitness & Froyo.” I already like her – fellow UT alumna, Jesus-lover, fitness fanatic, fabulous photographer. Keep up the good work, girl!

6. Just for kicks: hubs’ family bought us tickets to the Chihuly exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum last night. It was pretty… pretty impressive! Check out some of the shots I stole with my iPhone.
